Welcome to the Shady Creek Outdoor Education Foundation

History of Our Program

When a site and facility were purchased by Sutter County in 2006, Shady Creek Outdoor School, (formerly known as Woodleaf Outdoor School), was established. Our program, with humble beginnings in Butte Meadows in 1958, has been growing and hosting students from the Yuba-Sutter area for over 60 years.

The Shady Creek Outdoor Education site is located at 18601 Pathfinder Way, Nevada City, California and hosts nearly 5000 students each school year. Throughout the year the site is utilized for various enterprises, and Summer and Day Camps. Among the enterprise opportunities are corporate and private retreats, college groups, weddings, and family reunions.

Currently, our education program thrives under the leadership and development of Shannon Cueva, continuing the legacy of Jack King, Jack Murtha, (Tipi) John Hendrickson, and George Stratman.

Shady Creek Outdoor Education Foundation (SCOEF), also formerly known as the Woodleaf Foundation, was founded in 1990 to support the Sutter County Outdoor Education Program, which is operated by the Sutter County Superintendent of Schools Office.
