Shady Creek Outdoor School

Shady Creek Outdoor Program is the outdoor educational component provided by the Sutter County Office of Education.  It began in the late 1950's with the participation of approximately 35 students from Yuba-Sutter counties. The location varied per needs adn availability during this time.

In 1969 the outdoor education program moved to Woodleaf, CA to a facility owned by Young Life.  For the next 39 years the outdoor education program found a home at Woodleaf and came to be known as Woodleaf Outdoor School.

The outdoor education program gained support and recognition as one of the premiere outdoor education programs targeting 4th - 6th grade students.  From the original annual 35 students, Woodleaf Outdoor School grew to host more than 5,000 students annually from counties including Butte, Yuba, Sutter, Tehama, Nevada, Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, Glenn, and Colusa.  To date over 500,000 students have participated in the outdoor education program, referred to by many as the "Week that Lasts a Lifetime".

Sutter County Office of Education had the unique opportunity to purchase its own facility in 2006 and in doing so created a sustainable permanent home with unlimited growth potential for the outdoor education program.  It is known as Shady Creek.

Shady Creek has 132 acres nestled in the Sierra Nevada's just 10.5 miles from Nevada City and is in its second year of operation.
